A political group, the Public Enlightenment Movement (PEM), has distributed 50kg bags of rice to over 1,500 residents of Kano State as part of its Ramadan relief initiative.
The group said the intervention was aimed at cushioning the impact of rising food prices and supporting vulnerable households during the fasting period.
Speaking during the distribution in Kano on Sunday, the coordinator of the group, Nuhu Balarabe, said the beneficiaries cut across Kannywood practitioners, social media influencers, media personnel, orphans and other vulnerable members of the community.
He disclosed that no fewer than 30 journalists would benefit from the initiative, with more than 60 bags of 50kg rice specifically set aside for media practitioners.
According to him, the gesture represents an increase from a previous intervention where 43 bags were distributed to journalists who consistently covered the movement’s activities.

Balarabe explained that PEM was established to promote awareness of the infrastructure and development projects of President Bola Tinubu.
He listed key projects to include the Sokoto–Badagry Highway, the Kano–Kaduna–Abuja Expressway and the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano gas pipeline.
The coordinator called on residents of the region to continue praying for the president’s good health and success, noting that the movement remains committed to community enlightenment, social support initiatives and strengthening collaboration between the media and grassroots communities.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, a Kannywood actress, Hajara Usman, described the gesture as timely, especially at a period when many families are grappling with high living costs.
She said the rice distribution would go a long way in easing the burden on households during Ramadan.
