British number one Emma Raducanu is set to face 23 Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in what will be their first-ever career clash after they were slated to play each other at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Raducanu, who earned her highest WTA ranking in 10th place on August 11, 2022, turned pro four years ago to start her campaign for Grand Slam titles.
Although the Canadian-born British international clinched her first Grand Slam last year after she defeated Leylah Fernandez, 6-4, 6-3, to win the 2021 US Open, the 19-year-old lost in the second round of 2022 Australian Open and 2022 French Open.
Also, her opponent Williams, who revealed last week about retiring from the sport, said she was ‘evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me’.

Williams’ exit from the sport could come after the upcoming US Open where Britain’s Raducanu will be defending the title she won as an unseeded 18-year-old a year ago.
Prior to the US Open event, the duo will meet for the first time in Cincinnati on Monday, with the winner of the first-round clash taking on either Victoria Azarenka or Kaia Kanepi in the next round.
The American, who clinched her first of her six titles at Flushing Meadows in 1999, was tearful following her second-round exit to Belinda Bencic at the National Bank Open in Toronto on August 10, 2022.
