Qatar produced a dramatic late comeback to hold Switzerland 1–1 in a Group B encounter at the FIFA World Cup 2026, earning their first-ever point at a World Cup finals in extraordinary fashion.
At the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Switzerland appeared set for victory after Breel Embolo converted a 17th-minute penalty following a challenge on Remo Freuler by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.
However, the decision was surrounded by controversy, with replays suggesting Freuler may have been marginally offside in the build-up.
Despite dominating possession, chances, and overall control, Switzerland failed to extend their lead. Dan Ndoye, Ruben Vargas and Embolo all missed clear opportunities that left the door open for a late twist.
Qatar, largely outplayed for most of the match, struck in the 94th minute when Boualem Khoukhi powered a header past the Swiss goalkeeper from Homam El Amin’s cross, sparking wild celebrations from the hosts’ bench.
The result marks a significant milestone for Qatar, who endured a difficult campaign as hosts in the previous edition, where they lost all three group matches.
This draw, however, ensures they avoid another defeat and secures a memorable moment in their World Cup history.

Switzerland will feel aggrieved after controlling much of the game and will now regroup ahead of their next Group B fixture against Bosnia-Herzegovina, while Qatar face Canada in their upcoming match in Vancouver.
Swiss coach Murat Yakin will also reflect on his side’s missed chances and lack of killer instinct, while Qatar’s Julen Lopetegui praised his team’s resilience and belief after snatching a result few saw coming.
