The Enugu State Police Command has rescued a kidnapped woman, killed one suspected kidnapper and launched a manhunt for other fleeing gang members.
The command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Saturday in Enugu, said that the feat was achieved following an intelligence-guided operation at Okpuje in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
Ndukwe said that the operation followed a swift response to a distress call at 10a.m. on July 31, reporting that armed kidnappers emerged from a nearby forest and abducted a woman along the Anuka Road, Okpuje, Nsukka Local Government Area.
“Consequent upon the information, the divisional police officer of Okpuje division immediately mobilised police operatives, forest guards, and neighbourhood watch members, who tracked the suspects into Anuka Forest, near the Enugu-Kogi State boundary.
“During the ensuing gun duel, one suspect was neutralised, while others fled with suspected gunshot injuries..

“The victim was rescued unhurt, while her two children and a motorcycle, left behind by the kidnappers at the scene were also secured.
“The victim and her children have since been reunited with their family, while efforts have been intensified to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects,” he said.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Giwa, commended police officers, forest guards, and neighbourhood watch members for their swift response and collaboration.
Giwa reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations against violent crime.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible and timely information to the police.
