The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 65-year-old man alleged to be an arms dealer after he was caught with a large cache of live ammunition at Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, noting that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad based in Akwuzu acted on credible intelligence to carry out the operation on Friday.
“The team arrested one Akpan Godwin, aged 65, who was found in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition,” Ikenga said.
He added that the suspect admitted to engaging in the illegal trade of ammunition and also provided names of other accomplices linked to the supply chain.
The police assured that efforts are underway to track down his partners and dismantle the arms trafficking ring.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the command disclosed that its operatives also recovered vandalised high-tension cables, transformer components, and locally fabricated weapons from another group of suspects.
Ikenga said four people were arrested during the operation, while one suspect died after sustaining gunshot injuries while attempting to escape.
“The items recovered include bags of high-tension cables, melted wires, and transformer parts. Preliminary findings show that the syndicate specialises in vandalising power installations, with Lagos serving as their primary market for sales,” he added.
The police said investigations are ongoing in both cases to ensure the perpetrators and their networks are brought to justice.
