Sokoto State Police Command has started crime mapping, identification of vulnerable points, and mass deployment of officers on motorized and foot patrols as well as intelligence gathering on targeted locations where several raids on criminal hideouts were undertaken.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Muhammed Usaini Gumel, stated this during a press conference held with police operational and tactical commanders at the Police Officers Mess in Sokoto on Monday.
CP Gumel said the development is in accordance with the directives recently given by of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, to all strategic commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He said critical infrastructures within the State, particularly the Nigeria Correctional Services would be properly protected by the State Command against attacks by criminal elements.
“Recently, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba psc(+), NPM, fdc had convened a conference with all strategic commanders at FHQ Abuja where strategies towards enhancing police operational response and stabilizing the security order were re-evaluated.
“This followed IGP’s directives to all Commands and Formations to immediately commence a special visibility policing operation across the country. In compliance with this directive, Sokoto state police command began crime mapping, identification of vulnerable points, and massive deployment of personnel on motorized and foot patrols in addition to the utilization of intelligence on targeted locations where several raids on criminal hideouts were undertaken.

“In the same vein, this police command is determined to secure critical government installations and most importantly the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in the state and it is on this note that had already jointly conducted a review of the existing security architecture, and identified the gaps and vulnerabilities at the Custodial facilities and currently complementing the Service strength in its determination for upscaling security in and around such facilities and never to allow any avoidable security breaches.
“The security situation in recent times shows a concerning trend of an increase in the threat posed to the nation by terror elements which include bandits, kidnappers, and other highly organized and mobile violent criminal syndicates. On the foregoing, let me keep assuring members of the public that the police in the state are currently strengthening the existing levels of collaboration and synergy with the military and other relevant security agencies to reverse the current internal security slide.
“We cannot achieve this goal all alone without stakeholder’s engagement so that we can defeat these criminals who are our common enemies and hell-bent on altering our values for communal peace and security.
“Discipline and professionalism remain the bedrock of the current IGP and the Force Management Team. It is on this note the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the IGP is continuing charging all police officers to protect the citizens with integrity and to always serve them with compassion.
“It is on this note that recently, three policemen were dismissed who were caught on viral videos dignifying and justifying extortion, violently abusing the right of citizens they had sworn to serve and protect. In a like manner, all Policemen of Sokoto State command are seriously warned against such misconduct, and any erring officer found wanting will be viewed seriously,” CP Gumel said.
