The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Osifo Tony Emefile, psc, fsi, as the new Director of Sports for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
DCP Emefile takes over from Commissioner of Police (CP) Patrick A. Atayero, MSc, MBA, psc, who has held the position since March 26, 2020.
Under CP Atayero’s leadership, the NPF recorded significant achievements in sports development, building on the foundation laid by the Force as a key pillar of Nigerian sports.
The newly appointed Director of Sports brings a wealth of experience to the role. A former ace striker for the Police Machine Football Team, DCP Emefile won the 1993/1994 Bournvita Award for highest goal scorer.

He has also served as a Board Member of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (2013-2017), the pioneer Chairperson of the Police Scrabble Association, and the current Chairman of the Police Athletics Association.
Additionally, he has played key roles in organizing the 13th and 14th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA) and represents the Force as a security consultant on the League Management Committee for the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Egbetokun congratulated DCP Emefile on his new appointment, urging him to build on the successes of his predecessor and further advance sports development within the Nigeria Police Force.
The appointment was officially announced on February 14, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
