  • A separate operation led to the arrest of a security guard accused of vandalising and stealing armoured electrical cables.

The suspects, identified as Dick Udofia, Emem Charles and Ubong Matthew, were allegedly found in possession of substances suspected to be methamphetamine, popularly known as “Ice,” cannabis and other drug-related items.

In a statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, the police said preliminary investigations showed that the three suspects admitted being members of the Vikings Confraternity.

According to the statement, investigators also alleged that one of the suspects, Ubong Matthew, was forcefully initiated into the cult group on July 5, 2026, during a ceremony allegedly organised by Dick Udofia at the same location.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained efforts to rid the state of cultism, illicit drug activities and vandalism of critical infrastructure,” the statement said.

The police added that the suspects, said to be students of a polytechnic whose identity was withheld, are assisting investigators with information that could lead to the arrest of other fleeing members of the group.

In a separate operation, the command also arrested a 32-year-old private security guard, Joshua Akpan, over allegations of vandalising and stealing armoured electrical cables and other electrical installations from churches, residential buildings, factories and government facilities.

Police said a search of Akpan’s residence led to the recovery of cut-to-size armoured cables, bundles of vandalised electrical wires, pliers, an iron-cutting blade, a hammer and other tools suspected to have been used in carrying out the thefts.

According to the command, the suspect confessed during interrogation to vandalising and stealing electrical cables from a Catholic cathedral where he was employed as a security guard.

The police said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the alleged syndicate and recover additional stolen property.
