Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested three suspected cultists believed to be members of the notorious Neo Black Movement of Africa, also known as the Axe Men Confraternity, during a routine patrol in Calabar.
The Anti-Kidnapping Squad intercepted the suspects around 8 Miles by Technical Roundabout in the Cross River State capital. According to police sources, the suspects, identified as Oshaka Joseph, 29, Jessy Moga, 20, and Joseph Odey, 29; were traveling in a Hyundai Elantra with registration number CAL-894-GG when they were apprehended.
During the operation, security operatives recovered a locally made pistol and two live cartridges from Moga. In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, the suspects confessed to belonging to the secret cult group. They further revealed that the firearm in their possession was given to them by their former leader, identified as Santos.
Santos, the police said, is a wanted cult kingpin linked to the shooting of a university lecturer at the University of Cross River State in April 2025.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, has ordered a discreet investigation to track down Santos and other cultists connected to the case. Afegbua also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor the activities of their children, warning that cultism continues to pose a serious threat to peace and security in the state.
“The general public is advised to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or security agency to help rid the state of cult-related violence,” the statement added.
The police said this arrest has sent strong signals in Calabar, where residents have repeatedly raised concerns over cult clashes and insecurity. Police authorities assured that the fight against cultism, kidnapping, and violent crimes will be intensified to restore peace in Cross River State.
