Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Duru Chu Okongwu. Obi paid a condolence visit to the late statesman’s family, reflecting on his remarkable service to Nigeria.
Okongwu, who served under General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration, held several key positions, including Minister of National Planning, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. Obi described him as a leader of exceptional integrity, whose tenure in public service was marked by unwavering dedication and selflessness.
“Late Chu Okongwu’s service to our nation reflected his devotion and commitment to progress,” Obi remarked. “He was a man of integrity who served faithfully and worked tirelessly for Nigeria’s development. He lived an exemplary life of modesty, demonstrating the self-discipline that is rare among political leaders today. Despite holding such esteemed positions, he owned only two houses—one in Enugu and another in his home village.”
Obi praised Okongwu as one of the few public servants who resisted corruption. He recalled that as Minister of Finance, Okongwu played a key role in advising Gen. Babangida on bank licensing but never abused his position for personal gain. Similarly, as Minister of Petroleum, he never allocated oil blocks or import licenses to himself—an uncommon trait in modern governance.

“If he had chosen to enrich himself instead of serving the nation, he would have been celebrated today, and his funeral would have been a grand affair attended by dignitaries,” Obi stated. “Sadly, we live in a society that often glorifies those who loot the system rather than those who serve with honour.”
He commended the late minister for dedicating his knowledge, skills, and passion to national development. “I have come to bid him farewell, hoping that we, as leaders, will learn from his exemplary legacy. May God grant him eternal rest and comfort his family and all of us mourning this great loss.”
Duru Chu Okongwu’s life and legacy remain a beacon of integrity in Nigerian politics, setting a standard for leadership that prioritizes service over personal enrichment. His passing is a profound loss to the nation, but his principles and contributions will continue to inspire future generations. Obi added.
