Victor Osimhen has surpassed Obafemi Martin’s eleven goals in a Serie A season to set sight on Simeon Nwakolo’s 20-goal record.

Osimhen, in Napoli’s match against Fiorentina on Sunday, scored his 12th Serie A goal to overtake his fellow
compatriot’s record.

The Trumpet reports that  the young prodigy, who was out of Serie A season for over a month after sustaining a head injury, thrived in Napoli’s attack to punch in a late strike for the Partenopei.

Napoli, in their last match against Fiorentina, lost 3-2 at home to put their Serie A title hunt in jeopardy and this prompted a reaction from the manager Luciano Spaletti.

Speaking after the defeat, Spaletti said: “This is a very costly defeat and in certain ways was undeserved. Fiorentina played their game and earned the win, but we started strong, then tried to play too long and allowed
them to take control of midfield.

“When we conceded the second goal, it all became far more difficult. We have to take some of the blame for what happened, but it’s so disappointing because the fans and the attitude of the whole team throughout the
week was the right one.

“Fiorentina plays man against man, Milenkovic pushes far up to chase his man and leaves these spaces we could’ve made more of.

If you don’t have the quality to dribble your way out of trouble, then you end up with long balls.

“Osimhen wasn’t in the best shape today, as he skipped a couple of training sessions. He did well but could’ve done better in these physical duels with Igor.

“Of course, things change, because now it’s all more difficult. We have no choice other than to be professional, try to win the next game, and see what happens. It is no longer in our hands,” he added.

Napoli, continuing its pursuit of the 2021-22 Serie A title, welcomes Roma to the Diego Armando Maradona on Monday, April 18, 2022.
