The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has said that Nigeria must confront the “uncomfortable truth” that its political and economic structures require urgent reforms if the country is to overcome decades of underdevelopment.
In a joint independence message signed by its leaders — Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda; Deputy Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki; Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Ali Isa J.C; and Deputy Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi — the lawmakers argued that while Nigerians celebrate freedom from colonial rule, the country still grapples with poverty, insecurity, and governance failures.
“As we all celebrate another year of freedom from our colonial masters, the Caucus salutes the sacrifices of our founding fathers and other heroes past who gave everything for the independence we all enjoy today,” the statement read.
The caucus warned that the “recurring problems of insecurity, hunger, youth unemployment, and infrastructure deficits” continue to frustrate national development. It also accused political leaders of failing to prioritize equity, fairness, and justice, thereby fueling divisions that threaten Nigeria’s cohesion.
“We must also face the uncomfortable truth that our political and economic structures need deliberate and timely reforms. More importantly, the distribution of resources must prioritize every Nigerian, regardless of region, religion, ethnicity, and any other narrow-minded considerations,” the statement continued.

According to the opposition lawmakers, only honest introspection and firm commitment to reforms can rescue Nigeria from “stymied development” and put the country on the path to prosperity. They stressed that leaders at all levels must show genuine accountability and commitment to the welfare of citizens.
The lawmakers also called on Nigerians to embrace inclusivity and unity, warning that no single group could achieve meaningful progress in isolation.
“As we move forward, let us harness the strength in our differences to build a nation that works for all its citizens. Also, we call on every Nigerian to recommit to the values of peace, unity, and development, knowing that the future and greatness of our country rests on our ability to stay united and work together towards common goals,” the caucus said.
They urged citizens to “renew hope and commitment to a greater Nigeria” and expressed optimism that the country could rise from its challenges and fulfill the dreams of its founding fathers.
“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement added.
