Just as the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) announced extension of its strike action, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has urged the Federal Government to resolve the faceoff with ASUU and reopen universities without further delay.
The Council condemned the impasse which has grounded the nation’s ivory tower and tendered active Nigerian youthful student’s body indolent for months.
The NYCN also lamented the economic loss due to the grounding of all commercial activities within and around Nigerian university campuses while the strike lasted.
NYCN’s concern was contained in a communique issued at the end of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) held Saturday, at the Lunda Hotel, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In the communique signed and made available to journalists on Monday by Amb. Innocent Nduanya, Deputy President, NYCN, said the Executive Council discussed the state of education and concluded that “NEC frown at the prolonged industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
“NEC notes that Nigerian students are now looking up to the Federal Government as a matter of urgency to resolve all issues with ASUU so that the nation’s university can be open for students without further delay.”

Ahead of the 2023 election, NYCN urged Nigerian youths to support fellow youths seeking elective positions and others who are not too old to lead the nation at this critical time.
In the same light, the Council granted express waiver to National, State, and Zonal executive members, local government and any of its members who are willing to contest for any elective position to do so in any political party of their choice. Adding that, their aspiration to serve their constituencies, States and Nigeria will not stop them from being an executive member or NYCN member.
The National Executive Committee waded into the crisis in the Nasarawa State chapter of NYCN, rejected two contradictory reports earlier submitted by a single committee and consequently set up a 3 Man Committee.
The fresh committee as approved by the NEC compromised of NYCN Treasurer, Comrade Ezemagu Sunny Nnamdi, as Chairman, NYCN Assistant Secretary North East, Comrade Ibrahim Dangata as the Secretary and NYCN National Program Officer 1, Comrade Ayyub Giwa -Jimoh as a member.
“NEC urged the committee to give all NYCN members and stakeholders in Nasarawa State a fair hearing to enable them to understand the issues behind the crisis and make recommendations. It gave the committee 7 weeks to submit its report.
“NEC also agrees that pending the resolution of the crisis, Comrade Idris Ojoko shall remain the NYCN State Chapter Chairman,” the statement read.
