The ancient Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has announced the passing of its traditional ruler, Macaulay Ovbagbedia, Uhurhie-Osadjere II, the Ohworode of Olomu.
The solemn announcement was made on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the palace of the late monarch in Ovwor-Olomu by the kingdom’s traditional leadership, led by the Otota of Olomu, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN).
He was flanked by members of the Olomu Traditional Council of Chiefs and the royal family.
The declaration was accompanied by traditional rites, including the performance of Ema dancers and the symbolic firing of 21 cannon shots, an age-old custom signifying the departure of a revered monarch.
Ovbagbedia, who ascended the throne on May 20, 2023, was known for his wisdom, humility, and commitment to the cultural heritage of the Olomu people.
In accordance with tradition, the kingdom has declared a one-month period of mourning, effective from July 12 to August 12, 2025.

During this time, all markets across the kingdom will remain closed, and no burials or marriage celebrations will take place.
Shops are only permitted to conduct partial transactions.
Furthermore, all Olomu chiefs are instructed to wear mourning bands on their left arms and refrain from wearing the traditional red chieftaincy cap throughout the mourning period.
A five-minute silence was observed in honour of the departed king, as the Olomu Kingdom begins the journey of bidding farewell to a monarch whose reign, though brief, left a lasting legacy.
