The State House of Assembly has passed into law an Executive Bill seeking the disbandment and delisting of Amasiri Development Center as one of the 64 Development Centres in the State following a recent attack on the Okporojo village in Oso-Edda Community in Edda LGA of the State by Amasiri warlords.

Amasiri community is under Afikpo Local government Area of Ebonyi state. This has also led to the sack of all government political appointees from the area.

The passage of the bill which henceforth reduced the number of Development Centers in the State to 63 and that of Afikpo Local government to four was one of the outcomes of the plenary of the State House Assembly which took place at the Legislative Complex, in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

The law is deemed to come into force on 3rd February 2026.

Commenting shortly after an exhaustive deliberation of the House, the Speaker, Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chief Moses Odunwa who earlier condemned the dastardly attack on Okporojo people, said the State House of Assembly was strongly in support of Governor Francis Nwifuru’s decision to expunge Amasiri DC as one of the Development Centers in the State and described Governor’s action as proactive and corrective.

According to the speaker, the attack on Okporojo people was unwarranted given the peaceful disposition of the Chief Servant of the State and prayed for eternal repose of the deceased and urged Okporojo people to remain calm and law abiding while the State works on bring lasting Peace in the area.

In their remarks, some members of the House, including the member representing Ebonyi North East, Hon Aloysius Nwodo, the representative of Izzi West State Constituency, Chief Godwin Abiri, Hon Ifeanyi Nwakpu representing Ikwo North, Hon Innocent Chikaodili Nomeh representing Ezza North West and his Ezza South counterpart, Hon. Friday Ogbuewu, described the attack as barbaric, senseless, regrettable and unfortunate.

They also pledged support to the dissolution of the DC and other facilities in the area by the Government and appealed to Government law enforcement agencies deployed to the area to be alive to their duties.

Other members who made their contributions included Hon . Lucas Chukwu representing Ishielu South State Constituency, and Hon Charles Nkwoemezie of Onicha West State Constituency.

They commended the Governor for his timely interventions in restoring peace in the warring areas saying there was no price too high for peace urging Amasiri People to demonstrate true repentance rather than staging protests.

The House thereafter received and adopted Local Government reports as presented by the House Committee Chairman on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon Goodluck Obinna Mbam.
