Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to demand accountability from political leaders over the country’s worsening electricity crisis and governance challenges.

Key Highlights:

  • Peter Obi urged Nigerians to demand stronger accountability over governance and the power crisis.
  • He compared Nigeria’s electricity output (about 4,000 MW) with South Africa’s over 40,000 MW, saying Nigerians should not accept poor performance.
  • Obi made the comments at a press briefing in Abuja under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
  • He said citizens must actively speak out and hold leaders responsible for failing public services.
  • His remarks have sparked renewed online debate on governance and electricity challenges in Nigeria.

Addressing a press conference at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja, Obi compared Nigeria’s electricity generation with that of South Africa, noting that South Africans still openly complain despite generating over 40,000 megawatts of electricity, while Nigeria generates far less and many citizens remain silent.

According to him, Nigerians must stop accepting poor governance as normal and begin speaking up against the country’s challenges.

“I was in South Africa, they have over 40k megawatt of electricity and yet people are complaining they have no power when we have just 4k in Nigeria and we’re not complaining,” Obi said.

He stressed that the current state of the country is unsustainable and warned that future generations should not continue to suffer the effects of poor leadership.

The former Anambra State governor also said citizens possess the democratic power to hold leaders accountable, adding that public officials should no longer take Nigerians for granted.

“This is the time for us to come out to complain. What I’m seeing now, I can change it. Those who refuse to count our votes, we’ll count them with it.

“Our children cannot go on like this, this country must work, people can no longer take us for granted,” he added.

Obi’s remarks have continued to generate reactions online amid ongoing debates over governance, electricity supply and the country’s economic challenges.
