NYSC Swears In 2,101 Corps Members in Enugu
Awolola said the newly sworn-in corps members comprised 983 males and 1,118 females, adding that they had been deployed to the state for the one-year national service programme.
She commended the Enugu State Government for its support and assistance to the NYSC scheme, particularly its interventions aimed at improving the welfare, security and general well-being of corps members.
According to her, the interventions had helped create a more conducive environment for the implementation of NYSC programmes in the state.
She specifically highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading of facilities at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu, as well as improved welfare support for serving corps members.
The Awgu camp has undergone major rehabilitation, including improvements to accommodation, water supply, roads, lighting and other facilities.
NYSC Urges Corps Members to Maintain Discipline
The NYSC coordinator reminded the corps members that discipline remains a major pillar of the national service scheme.
She urged them to obey camp rules and regulations, respect constituted authorities and comply with NYSC bye-laws throughout their service year.
Awolola also explained that the orientation programme was designed to instil patriotism, discipline, self-reliance, leadership and national integration.
She said the programme would expose the corps members to physical training, drills, lectures, social activities and interactive sessions aimed at preparing them for their responsibilities during and after the service year.
The coordinator encouraged the corps members to acquire knowledge and skills that would enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Mbah Announces New Allowance for Corps Members
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Peter Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare and security of corps members serving in Enugu State.
Mbah announced that his administration would commence payment of a new allowance to all corps members in October.
However, the governor did not disclose the amount each corps member would receive under the new allowance arrangement.
Enugu State had previously increased its financial support for corps members, with the state government reported in 2025 to have raised the monthly allowance for regular corps members to ₦20,000, while different amounts applied to corps members in certain professional categories.
Mbah Urges Corps Members to Connect With Host Communities
The governor urged the corps members to establish good relationships with people in their host communities.
He advised them to familiarise themselves with the culture, traditions and languages of the communities where they would serve.
Mbah also encouraged the corps members to view their service year as an opportunity to contribute to national development rather than simply as a compulsory assignment.
Commissioner Urges Corps Members to Respect Local Culture
Earlier, the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Lloyd Ekweremadu, advised the corps members against discrimination.
He urged them to respect the culture and traditions of their host communities and take the orientation programme seriously.
Ekweremadu described the service year as an opportunity for personal development and greater understanding of Nigeria, rather than merely an obligation.
Chief Judge Administers Oath of Allegiance
The Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, represented by Justice Anthony Onovo, administered the oath of allegiance to the newly inducted corps members.
He urged them to make productive use of their time in Enugu State and take advantage of the opportunities available to them during their service year.
The 2,101 corps members are now expected to proceed with the various stages of the NYSC programme, including their deployment to places of primary assignment and participation in Community Development Service activities. For more updates, follow us on X.
