The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has unveiled activities for its 2026 Press Week, with events focusing on ethical journalism, democratic accountability, mental health, and the fight against disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

  • The event theme focuses on defending democracy and tackling disinformation during elections.
  • Activities scheduled include a medical outreach, mental health walk, public lecture, awards ceremony, quiz competition, and social events.
  • Mohammed Bago and Abdullahi Ganduje are expected to attend the lecture event.
  • Grace Ike encouraged journalists and stakeholders to actively participate in the programme.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by Obas Esiedesa, Chairman, and Queen Kunde Secretary, Organising Committee, noting that the theme for this year’s Press Week is: “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation.”

The council said the activities are aimed at promoting responsible journalism and strengthening democratic values as Nigeria prepares for another election cycle.

Among the programmes lined up are a mental health walk scheduled for May 18, a public lecture and awards ceremony on May 19 at Transcorp Hilton Abuja, a secondary school press club quiz competition, and a grand finale jean party.

The council disclosed that the public lecture and awards ceremony would attract over 1,000 participants, including politicians, media executives, civil society organisations, and senior government officials.

Governor Mohammed Bago is expected to chair the lecture, while former Abdullahi Ganduje will serve as co-chairman.

The inspector general of police and other prominent political figures are also expected at the event.
