The National Sports Commission (NSC) has constituted the Local Organising Committee for the upcoming 3rd combined African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships, which will take place from July 16 to 20, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The committee consists of 15 esteemed individuals recognised for their significant experience in sports management and corporate affairs.

Their selection emphasises the commission’s dedication to organising a championship that adheres to international quality benchmarks.

The African U-18/U-20 Athletics Championship stands as a leading continental event, uniting over 500 young athletes from various African nations.

With representatives anticipated from 53 countries, this championship is a key highlight in Africa’s athletics schedule.

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, will take the role of chairman for the organising committee, while Wasiu Isiaka, the Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State, has been designated as vice chairman.

Olopade noted that hosting the third iteration of this esteemed biannual championship illustrates the refreshed approach to sports within the framework of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, establishing Nigeria as a prominent site for global sporting events.

“This highlights the importance of the athletics industry, demonstrates our welcoming nature, aids in economic advancement, and signifies improvements in infrastructure,” he noted.

Moreover, Olopade attributed the successful proposal to host this event to the availability of high-quality sports venues in Ogun State.

The MKO Abiola International Stadium, which was upgraded for the Gateway Games, was instrumental in securing the rights to host.

“The sporting facilities in Abeokuta meet international standards, and our ability to host the U-18/U-20 African Championship is a direct advantage of the National Sports Festival.

“I want to thank Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun again for his insight regarding sports,” he expressed.

Other members of the LOC are Mr. Osaze Ubueze (Corporate Nigeria), Ms. Rosa Collins, Mr. Gadzama Tafiga, Mrs. Maria Wophil, Ms. Chichi Nwoko, Mr. Nnefiok Udo-Ubong, Mr. Gowon Apondona, Mallam Ladan Mustapha, Mrs. Arabinrin Aderonke Member, Musa Amadu, Mr. Jude Anyadufu, Mr. Babatunde Adeluola, with Mr. Shagaya Abdulmumeen, as secretary.
