The NNPC Foundation has donated a 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, in a move aimed at boosting specialised healthcare services in Northern Nigeria.
The MRI system was commissioned and handed over to the hospital management on Thursday, by the foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of NNPC Limited.
Speaking at the event, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Ojulari, represented by the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, said the intervention was part of the company’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across the country.
He said NNPC Limited, through its foundation, had continued to invest in projects that deliver measurable social impact, noting that healthcare remained a key area of focus.
Ojulari said the MRI installation followed similar interventions by the foundation, including the commissioning of hospital wards at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, and the donation of an MRI machine to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Anambra State.
According to him, the equipment will strengthen the diagnostic capacity of the Kano-based hospital and improve access to advanced medical imaging services for patients across the North-West and beyond.
“The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, is a vital institution in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Strengthening its diagnostic capacity will significantly improve service delivery and reduce the burden on patients,” he said.
Also speaking, the Executive Vice President, Business Services, NNPC Limited, Sophia Mbakwe, represented by the Executive Director, Programme Management, NNPC Foundation, said the facility would enhance the hospital’s ability to diagnose complex orthopaedic, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Yusuf Labaran, described the donation as a major contribution to healthcare delivery in the state.
He said the MRI machine would improve early detection and accurate diagnosis of diseases, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the country for advanced imaging services.
Earlier, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Isa Nurudeen, described the donation as a historic milestone, noting that the absence of an MRI machine had remained a major challenge for years.
He said the equipment would improve diagnosis, treatment planning and patient outcomes while reducing delays and the cost of accessing specialised imaging services.
Dr. Nurudeen added that the machine, manufactured in 2025, is among the most modern MRI systems available in Northern Nigeria.
