The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled far-reaching reforms aimed at strengthening internal democracy, enhancing accountability, and reinforcing party supremacy as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

Key Highlights

  • NDC adopts major reforms to strengthen internal democracy nationwide.
  • Elected officials directed to consult party structures before major policy decisions.
  • National Reconciliation Committee inaugurated to resolve internal disputes.
  • Comprehensive Code of Conduct to be developed for party officials and candidates.
  • Stricter financial accountability measures introduced for campaign funding.
  • Party reiterates commitment to transparency, discipline, and institutional growth ahead of the 2027 elections.

The resolutions were adopted during the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and announced in a statement issued on June 7, 2026, by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.

According to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the decisions are part of a broader strategy to build a strong political institution founded on collective responsibility, discipline, transparency, and adherence to party principles.

One of the key resolutions requires all elected officials serving under the NDC platform to consult party structures before making major decisions relating to policies, programmes, and appointments. While appointments involving personal staff are exempted, the party stressed that public officeholders must ensure their actions align with the party’s vision, objectives, and ideological framework.

The NEC also resolved that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organizations associated with the party must operate under the supervision and guidance of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, rather than functioning independently of established party structures.

To promote discipline and transparency, the NEC approved the development of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for party officials and candidates. A committee chaired by the National Legal Adviser has been mandated to draft the framework and implementation guidelines.

In a move designed to strengthen unity and cohesion within the party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with engaging aggrieved members and resolving internal disputes across the country.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to building a sustainable political institution, emphasizing that the NDC is not intended to be a personality-driven platform or a temporary political vehicle. Members, aspirants, and candidates were urged to demonstrate unwavering loyalty to the party and place national interest above personal ambitions.

On financial accountability, the NEC introduced stricter measures governing party finances. The party directed that all funds must be used exclusively for official party activities and required candidates seeking elective offices to fully disclose their campaign funding sources.

In addition, all campaign-related funds must be processed through designated party accounts to improve transparency, accountability, and compliance with party regulations.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress expressed confidence that the reforms would deepen internal democracy, strengthen party cohesion, and position the party as a credible and enduring political institution ahead of future electoral contests.

Party leaders said the resolutions underscore the NDC’s commitment to institutional growth, accountability, good governance, and democratic values as it continues to expand its political presence across Nigeria.
