Nigeria celebrates its first-ever victory at the FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2025, with Nora Ezike delivering an outstanding performance.

This landmark win marked a significant day for African basketball, as Nigeria’s flag was proudly displayed in Brno.

The Nigerian team erupted in joy as the final buzzer sounded against China, securing a thrilling 93-88 victory in a match that exceeded expectations, especially considering pre-tournament doubts about their ability to win.

“I drew inspiration from my trip to Paris 2024 with my family,” said Nora Ezike.

Ezike’s remarkable contribution was pivotal, as she scored an impressive 25 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists, and made two steals in her debut representing her country.

“I am thrilled and honored to represent my nation, and it’s exhilarating to achieve this first win,” she expressed after the historic match.

“The key to our success was adhering to our game plan and maintaining our resolve throughout the match.

“We played strong defense and supported one another, and when we were leading at the end, we remained calm and composed instead of rushing.”

This victory also brought to mind the D’Tigress’s remarkable achievements at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where they became the first African nation to win two games and reach the Quarter-Finals.

Nigeria has made history, elevating the profile of African basketball to new heights.

Ezike acknowledged this inspiration, stating, “I was motivated by watching Nigeria’s games in Paris 2024 with my family. It was amazing to see how far they progressed.”

Now, Nigeria’s challenge is to ensure that this joyous opening day is just the beginning of further historic achievements.
