The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called on residents of Enugu to remain alert and proactive in preventing fire incidents, especially during the harmattan season. This cautionary message was delivered on Thursday during a one-day training and sensitization campaign on fire outbreak prevention held in the city.
Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, Acting Zonal Coordinator of NEMA in the South-East, emphasized the urgency of reducing fire-related disasters through community awareness and individual responsibility. Speaking at the event, she highlighted directives from NEMA Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, urging Nigerians to collectively combat disasters often caused by negligence and carelessness.
The campaign included an awareness walk across Enugu metropolis, during which fliers containing fire prevention tips and emergency contact numbers were distributed. Residents were encouraged to adopt safety habits such as switching off electrical appliances when leaving home, school, or workplaces and teaching children the dangers of playing with flammable materials.
Echeazu underscored the importance of fire extinguishers or buckets of sand in homes, offices, and shops to tackle small fires. She also urged residents to keep emergency contacts, such as those shared on the distributed fliers, readily available to call fire services or emergency response teams when needed.
She advised business owners, farmers, and tanker drivers to consider insurance policies to safeguard their assets against fire-related losses. “Preventing fire outbreaks is a collective responsibility,” she added.
Chief Caleb Ani, Chairman of the Enugu South Council Area, commended the Federal Government and NEMA for their timely intervention, promising continued collaboration between the council, state, and federal authorities to enhance safety and welfare.

Mrs. Chinasa Mbah, Acting Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), lauded NEMA’s extensive sensitization efforts, describing them as vital to reducing fire-related losses.
Representing the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mrs. Eucharia Onwugbunam provided practical advice on administering first aid for fire burns, suggesting the immediate application of water to reduce heat before seeking medical attention.
Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) Coordinator, Mr. Emeka Oko, pledged to extend the sensitization campaign to every corner of the state, ensuring that fire prevention messages reach all communities.
One participant, Miss Ginika Obi, expressed gratitude for the training, noting that she learned the dangers of using mobile phones near gas appliances while cooking.
