The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief materials to residents affected by the May 2025 flood disaster in four local government areas of Akwa Ibom State, under the Federal Government’s Special Intervention programme.
The flooding, which impacted Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Uruan and Nsit Atai local government areas, displaced several households and damaged farmlands, homes and sources of livelihood.
Relief items delivered to the affected communities included 300 bags of rice, 300 bags of garri, 150 cartons of spaghetti, 30 cartons each of vegetable oil, canned tomatoes and seasoning cubes, as well as 30 bags of iodised salt.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, NEMA Director-General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, commiserated with the victims and described the intervention as a demonstration of the Federal Government’s support and concern for affected citizens. She was represented by the Head of Operations in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Mmandu Aisueni.
Mrs Umar said the assistance was aimed at providing short-term relief to families as they recover from the impact of the disaster, noting that the government remained committed to supporting communities affected by emergencies across the country.
She added that the growing challenges posed by climate change made it necessary to strengthen collaboration at all levels, especially within local communities, to improve disaster preparedness and response.
“The relief materials may not fully replace what was lost, but they represent our collective compassion and determination to support the recovery of the affected communities,” she said, assuring that NEMA would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to safeguard lives and property.

Also speaking, the member representing Uyo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Mark Esset, commended the Federal Government for what he described as a prompt and well-coordinated response. He praised the quality of the items distributed and urged residents to continue to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Esset said such interventions reflected the government’s commitment to citizens’ welfare and national development.
Beneficiaries of the intervention expressed gratitude for the assistance. Mr Idorenyin Inyang from Nsit Atai Local Government Area said the items would ease the hardship faced by flood victims, while Mrs Peace Kokoette of Uruan LGA thanked NEMA and Mr Esset for ensuring the relief materials reached their community, noting that residents had initially feared they were overlooked.
