The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal product manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters allegedly carried a registration number assigned to a cough syrup.
Key Highlights
- NAFDAC raids illegal herbal drinks factory in Agege, Lagos.
- Three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bore registration number A7-1827L.
- The number actually belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, NAFDAC says.
- Company manager arrested; managing director absent during the raid.
- Report suspected violations on 0800-1-623322, 0700-1-623322 or reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.
The discovery raises concerns about the growing threat of falsified product registration numbers in Nigeria’s herbal medicine market, where consumers rely on regulatory approval to determine whether products meet safety and quality standards.
NAFDAC disclosed the development on Wednesday, following an investigation triggered by a report published by The Guardian on October 10, 2026, concerning herbal products allegedly bearing falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
Registration Number Belonged To Cough Syrup
According to the agency, its investigative team conducted surveillance before raiding the facility, where it discovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing registration number A7-1827L.
However, verification through NAFDAC’s Automated Product Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) portal showed that the registration number belonged to Greentol Cough Syrup, not the herbal bitters.
The agency said the discovery confirmed the fraudulent use of the registration number on the herbal products.
During the operation, NAFDAC said the company’s managing director and chief executive officer was absent, while the company manager was arrested for further interrogation.
The agency did not disclose whether the products had been seized, how long the facility had been operating, or whether any consumers had suffered adverse effects from using the products.
It also did not announce any charges against the company or its management.

The agency provided its call centre numbers, 0800-1-623322 and 0700-1-623322, as well as the email address reforms@nafdac.gov.ng, for reporting suspected violations.
Series Of Lagos Enforcement Operations
The raid comes amid a series of enforcement operations targeting suspected counterfeit and unregistered products in Lagos.
On October 14, NAFDAC seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at more than ₦2 billion during an operation at the International Trade Fair Complex in Lagos.
The agency had also seized alcoholic beverages estimated to be worth ₦300 million at Ile-Epo Market earlier in October.
