Manchester United will continue to be without left-back Luke Shaw for their League Cup match against Barnsley on Wednesday, manager Erik Ten Hag confirmed on Monday. Shaw, who has been recovering from a calf injury sustained during pre-season, is still not fit for selection, with Ten Hag unable to provide a clear timeline for his return.
“Luke Shaw is progressing but not ready yet,” Ten Hag told reporters. “We have a plan, but it’s always dependent on how his recovery goes. There are many factors that could speed up or delay his return, so I can’t give a definitive date.”
However, there is positive news for United fans as defenders Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, and Noussair Mazraoui are available for the match after recovering from knocks picked up in United’s 3-0 win against Southampton on Saturday.

“They are all good to go,” said Ten Hag. “Mazraoui, De Ligt, and Martinez are available, and we’re ready for the challenge.”
While United welcomes back several key players, midfield newcomer Manuel Ugarte, who made his debut last week, remains a wildcard in Ten Hag’s selection process. “You will see tomorrow what the selection looks like,” the manager teased.
United will still be without several key players, including Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Leny Yoro, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Højlund, all of whom are sidelined with injuries.
Ten Hag emphasized the importance of squad rotation given the packed schedule, as United aims for silverware across multiple competitions this season. “We have to rotate, especially with so many games ahead. It’s not just about the starting XI—it’s a good problem to have,” he said.
