Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri in a stunning £31 million move, securing the Algerian international on a long-term deal that runs until 2030. The 24-year-old defender is set to feature in City’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign, beginning June 18 against Wydad AC of Morocco.
Ait-Nouri’s arrival is a major addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad as the reigning Premier League champions continue their aggressive summer rebuild. Known for his pace, technical finesse, and attacking flair, Ait-Nouri is expected to add depth and dynamism to City’s defensive line.
After initially joining Wolves on loan from French club Angers in 2020, Ait-Nouri made the move permanent in 2021 for £14.9 million. Last season, he emerged as one of Wolves’ standout players, contributing five goals and seven assists in 41 appearances, playing a crucial role in helping the club avoid relegation.
Reacting to his move, Ait-Nouri said, “Joining Manchester City is a dream come true. They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world. I’m excited to learn from Pep Guardiola and train with world-class players. This is the next big step in my career.”
The transfer marks the second major departure from Wolves this summer, following Manchester United’s £62.5 million acquisition of striker Matheus Cunha. For City, Ait-Nouri joins a growing list of summer signings that includes Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, who is arriving from AC Milan in a £46.3 million deal. These additions build on City’s £200 million January spending spree, underlining their intent to remain dominant both domestically and in Europe.

Ait-Nouri’s versatility is one of his biggest assets. He is comfortable playing as a traditional left-back, wing-back, or inverted full-back in Guardiola’s possession-based system. His quick dribbling and ball control help break defensive lines-an area City has been keen to strengthen. However, Guardiola is expected to fine-tune his decision-making in the final third and improve his assist tally, especially given City’s high expectations in the attacking department.
Defensively, the Algerian has evolved significantly since arriving in the Premier League, displaying improved one-on-one defending, aggression, and positional awareness, traits that align well with Guardiola’s tactical demands.
Meanwhile, City are also closing in on another signing, with talks ongoing to bring in 33-year-old Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. The English shot-stopper has served as third-choice at Stamford Bridge for four seasons and is expected to provide depth following the imminent departure of veteran Scott Carson, whose contract expires this summer.
As Manchester City reshape their squad for another title push and Club World Cup glory, the acquisition of Rayan Ait-Nouri sends a clear message: the champions are not slowing down.
