Speaking in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Maduro’s son, Guerra Nicolás Maduro, alleged that the former Venezuelan leader is currently being detained under crowded prison conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
According to him, rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine, known for his controversial legal troubles and probation violations, was at one point among inmates sharing the same communal prison space with his father.
The rapper recently completed a three-month sentence at the Brooklyn detention facility, further fueling online discussions after he reportedly claimed that Maduro signed a SpongeBob toy for him while they were both in custody.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested by United States authorities in Caracas in January 2026 before being transferred to New York to face charges linked to narco-terrorism and international drug trafficking.
U.S. prosecutors accused the former Venezuelan leader of allegedly using his position in government to facilitate cocaine shipments into the United States. However, Maduro and his wife have strongly denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty in court.
In the interview, Maduro Guerra described the charges against his father as politically motivated, insisting that the Maduro family has no connection to terrorism or drug trafficking activities.
