Croatian legend Luka Modric marked the eve of his 39th birthday in style, delivering a spectacular free kick to secure a 1-0 home victory over Poland in their Nations League A Group 1 clash on Sunday. Modric’s magic moment came in the 52nd minute, with a perfectly executed strike from the edge of the box that sailed just under the crossbar, leaving Poland’s defense and goalkeeper helpless.
After suffering a 2-1 defeat to Portugal in their Nations League opener, Croatia came out pressing from the start. Despite early chances for Duje Caleta-Car and Modric, the first half ended goalless as the home side struggled to break down Poland’s defense.

However, it was Modric who broke the deadlock with his world-class free kick, reminding fans once again why he remains one of football’s finest midfielders. Croatia continued to dominate possession, while Poland’s offense barely threatened, managing just two attempts on goal throughout the game. Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic only had to make a crucial save after halftime, denying Poland’s Nicola Zalewski from their best opportunity.
The match had moments of drama as strikers Igor Matanovic and Robert Lewandowski both rattled the crossbar late in the second half, but Croatia held on to claim all three points.
With this victory, Croatia bounces back in their Nations League campaign, keeping their hopes alive as Modric continues to shine at nearly 39 years old.
