A hippopotamus that recently attacked communities in Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas of Adamawa State, resulting in the death of one person, has been killed by residents of Shelleng.
It would be recalled that on July 29, 2025, local authorities in Adamawa State reported that a hippopotamus had invaded the Guyuk and Shelleng areas, causing at least one fatality and injuring several others due to the influx of displaced hippos.
Chairman of Guyuk Local Government Area, Mr. Shalom Kassa, stated during an interview on the day of the incident that a young man was killed by one of the hippos in the Banjiram community.
Kassa explained that the hippos, displaced by flooding near the Kiri Dam in Shelleng, have wandered into populated areas, farmlands, and riverbanks, creating fear among residents.
“This situation poses a serious threat to human lives and livelihoods; the animals are destroying crops, invading flooded homes, and endangering both residents and livestock,” he said.
In response to the crisis, Kassa, along with the Chairman of Shelleng Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubakar Abba and local traditional leaders, requested for assistance to kill the hippos from the state government.
Kassa noted that ongoing flooding in various parts of the state, particularly in Guyuk and Shelleng, has forced the animals out of their natural habitats and into human settlements.

This isn’t the first instance of hippos being spotted in Shelleng and Guyuk Local Government Areas.
They typically appear when there is flooding in the communities due to excess water.
According to some locals, these wandering animals have been known to come from Cameroon via the river that connects to that country.
