Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has been honoured with the Lions Club International Icon of Leadership Excellence Award in recognition of what the organisation described as his impactful leadership and commitment to development in Delta State.
The award was presented on Thursday during a courtesy visit by members of Lions Club International District 404 Nigeria to the Government House in Asaba, ahead of the organisation’s 19th Multiple Convention scheduled to hold in the state capital.
Leading the delegation, the Multiple Council Chairperson of the organisation, Dr. Ibrahim Jide Bello, said Asaba was selected as host city for the convention due to the prevailing peace, improved infrastructure, security, and accessibility under the Oborevwori administration.
He commended the governor for creating a conducive environment that encouraged the organisation to stage its major convention in Delta State.
“Thank you, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for providing the enabling environment that gave us the confidence to choose Asaba as the host of this award-winning convention.
“Asaba was carefully selected after considering critical factors such as infrastructure, accessibility, security, and other necessary requirements,” Bello stated.

According to him, the organisation’s interventions span various humanitarian causes, including vision care, childhood cancer support, environmental sustainability, hunger relief, disaster response, mental health advocacy, youth empowerment, and healthcare initiatives.
Bello noted that the governor’s developmental efforts, especially in healthcare, security, social welfare, and policy reforms, align with the humanitarian values of the organisation and the objectives of the administration’s MORE Agenda.
He further disclosed that the Lions International Foundation plans to support additional healthcare and humanitarian projects in Delta State, including interventions at Warri Central Hospital and other community-based programmes.
Responding, Governor Oborevwori expressed appreciation for the honour and praised Lions Club International for its sustained humanitarian activities, particularly in healthcare delivery through its eye clinic and medical outreach programmes in the state.
The governor said the organisation’s contributions in areas such as healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability have positively impacted many residents across Delta State.
“We are delighted that Asaba is hosting this event for the second time, which demonstrates the confidence your organisation has in Delta State.
“Hosting this convention will not only boost tourism and economic activities, but also further project Delta State as a peaceful and investment-friendly destination,” he said.
Oborevwori added that the values of compassion, integrity, and selfless service demonstrated by Lions Club International are in line with the vision of his administration’s MORE Agenda, which focuses on meaningful development and improved living standards for the people of the state.
He assured the organisation of the continued support of the Delta State Government for initiatives that promote humanitarian service and sustainable development.
“You are indeed partners in progress, and we are proud of the work you continue to do in service to humanity,” the governor added.
