The Chairman of Nsit Ubium Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Alfred Charles, has unveiled a ₦100 million Education Trust Fund aimed at supporting indigent but academically gifted students across the council.
Speaking during a media briefing at the council secretariat on Tuesday, Charles said the initiative aligns with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno and underscores his administration’s commitment to improving access to quality education.
According to him, the Trust Fund will provide dedicated financial support for students who lack the resources to pursue their education despite strong academic potential.
“We want to ensure that no brilliant child is denied education due to financial constraints.
This Trust Fund will serve as a reliable support system for such students,” he said.
Charles also revealed plans to expand the council’s scholarship scheme. After awarding scholarships to 53 students last year—covering tuition and textbooks—the council is set to sponsor an additional 50 students by August, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 103 before the end of his tenure.

In a move to enhance digital learning and examination access, the chairman announced the upgrade of a mini ICT centre into a fully equipped Computer-Based Test (CBT) facility.
The centre now houses 200 computers and has received official accreditation from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) following a successful inspection.
Powered entirely by solar energy, the CBT centre operates 24 hours a day, ensuring uninterrupted service.
Beyond serving as an examination venue, it has become a hub for candidates preparing for CBT exams, offering regular practice opportunities.
On infrastructure and revenue generation, Charles added that his administration is currently constructing the Urua Ntakrok market in Ikot Ubo to boost local economic activity.
