Leaders of warring communities of Ugep and Idomi in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State have agreed to sanction or hold any traditional leader responsible for further breakdown of law and order.

At a high level peace and security dialogue held yesterday at the Council Hall in Biase Local Government Area, both sides acknowledged that the prolonged disagreement between two monarchs had worsened mistrust among residents.

Key Highlights:

  • Leaders of Ugep and Idomi agreed to sanction traditional rulers or leaders who incite conflict.
  • A peace dialogue was held in Yakurr LGA, convened by local government authorities and security officials.
  • They resolved to punish the spread of false information that could trigger violence between the communities.
  • Both communities agreed to restore free movement, trade, and social relations.
  • Traditional rulers pledged reconciliation and commitment to lasting peace in Yakurr Local Government Area.

According to resolutions reached after the reconciliation meeting convened by the Chairman of Yakurr Local Government Council, Mr Yibala Inyang, the leaders also resolved to sanction anybody found to spread false or unverified information that could trigger violence between the two warring communities.

Also, they resolved that the traditional leadership of the affected community will bear responsibility where culprits of any future disturbance cannot be traced.

Both communities have equally agreed to immediately restore and protect the free movement of people, social ties, and lawful trade between Ugep and Idomi.

The peace and security dialogue, brought together traditional rulers, security officials, and key stakeholders from both sides.

The aim was to defuse rising tensions and lay the groundwork for long-term harmony between the neighbouring communities.

In attendance were the Paramount Ruler of Yakurr and Obol Lopon of Ugep, Obol Ofem Ubana, with members of his Council of Chiefs, and the Obol Lopon of Idomi, Obol Ofem Edet, alongside Idomi community representatives.

Also present were the State Security Adviser, Major Gen. O.U. Obono (rtd), and other security operatives and government officials.

The intervention became necessary to mend the strained relations between the two communities.

Addressing the gathering, Inyang made a passionate appeal for unity, reminding the leaders that Ugep and Idomi share a common history and heritage that predates the current dispute.

He argued that without reconciliation at the top, lasting peace at the grassroots would remain elusive.

Responding to the call, both royal fathers agreed to reconcile and set aside their differences for the sake of their people.

They committed to returning home to promote calm, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among their subjects.
