Lagosians have called on the state government to urgently address the rising flood crisis in parts of the state, especially Lekki, after Nollywood actress Cossy Ojiakor raised fresh concerns by sharing a video showing her street submerged following heavy rainfall.
The actress captured the flooded area on Instagram and X, showing floodwater deep enough to disrupt movement and prevent vehicles from passing through.
The incident has renewed criticism from residents, who accused authorities of failing to provide lasting solutions to Lagos’ recurring flooding despite years of warnings and concerns.
Many residents blamed poor drainage systems, rapid urban development, and weak flood management strategies for the worsening situation in areas like Lekki, where residents pay premium prices to live.
Reacting to the development, @Damsky4real1 said “We are in the rainy season, it should be expected in Lekki. There is no proper drainage and some of the houses should have a higher foundation.”
@Shocking_Prof wrote “Lekki is messed up this period. It’s a shame that Lagos is still struggling with flood issues in this present era where there’s a lot of drainage technology.”
Another resident, @mediprecious, recalled a previous flood experience in Victoria Island, describing the situation as dangerous and urging the Lagos State Government to take action.
“My worst experience during the rainy season was in Lagos, Victoria Island precisely. It was a mess. I couldn’t cry, I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t smile, I couldn’t just vex. I could still remember, a lady nearly lost her leg as she slipped into a gutter. One of her legs stuck into a tiny space between two slabs of the same gutter. People gathered to help her out. Imagine this happened at night when no one was around to help. Lagos state government please do something!!” She wrote.

@Rotimi_01 added: “People pay premium prices to live in Lekki, yet many still have to worry about floods whenever heavy rain falls. Development isn’t just about new estates; it’s about building resilient infrastructure too.”
@chimelenumma also questioned the country’s disaster response system, saying: “It seems like emergency response and early preparedness for natural disasters like flooding don’t work in Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, some residents suggested possible solutions, including improved drainage channels, water storage systems, and stronger flood prevention measures.
The renewed backlash comes as Lagos continues to battle seasonal flooding, with residents demanding more effective and permanent solutions from the government.
