Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the current governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, are set to dump the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the All Progressive Congress (APC). This bombshell revelation came from Bashir Ahmed, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, in a viral post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Ahmed, the APC is pulling out all the stops to welcome Kwankwaso and his loyalists, including Governor Yusuf, into its fold. He wrote, “Our party, the APC in Kano, is making all possible preparations to welcome Sen. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, along with members of his party, the NNPP, including our Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.” The post has sparked intense debate online, fueling speculation that the opposition NNPP may be imploding faster than expected.
This major defection news comes on the same period that Delta State witnessed a political earthquake of its own. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and all PDP political appointees and elected officials in Delta reportedly dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC. The announcement, made by PDP pioneer chairman in Delta State, Senator James Manager, shocked many within political circles.
Manager declared their move as a unanimous and strategic decision, saying, “We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat. I am the pioneer state chairman of the PDP, but you cannot be in a boat that is already capsizing, because I am a riverine man. Looking at issues the way they are, we have come to the inevitable conclusion to do something else.”

‘Defection threat in Kano APC forced Ganduje to drop senatorial ambition’
The defection wave appears to validate recent comments made by APC national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, who bluntly declared the NNPP “dead.” Speaking in Paris during the unveiling of APC’s France chapter, Ganduje said, “The NNPP is dead. And it will soon be buried; very, very soon. I’m looking at where we will bury the body. The coffin has already been constructed. What remains now is to dig the grave. And already they are digging the grave very, very soon.”
He added that even Kwankwaso, whom he referred to as the “so-called NNPP national leader,” would be welcomed back into the APC, hinting at behind-the-scenes reconciliation talks already in progress.
The NNPP has been mired in internal leadership crises and rising defections, with several politicians elected under its banner already making the jump to the APC. With power realignments intensifying and major figures switching loyalties, the 2027 general elections are shaping up to be the most unpredictable in Nigeria’s recent history.
