The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan (SAN), has assured Nigerians that the forthcoming Anambra State off-cycle governorship election will be peaceful, transparent, and credible. He gave the assurance during the signing of the Peace Accord organised by the National Peace Committee (NPC) under the leadership of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).
Professor Amupitan commended the NPC for its sustained effort in promoting non-violence and stability during elections, noting that the committee’s decision to extend the Peace Accord to off-cycle polls has helped reduce tension and political unrest in several states. He reminded political actors that peace would not be achieved through signatures alone but through genuine commitment to the principles of the accord.
“It is not the signatures on this document that guarantee peace; it is the genuine commitment to honouring its provisions,” Amupitan said, urging the 16 participating political parties and their candidates to ensure their supporters act responsibly throughout the process.
The INEC Chairman revealed that the Commission has completed logistics and personnel deployment plans ahead of the November 8, 2025 election. A total of 24,000 ad-hoc staff will be deployed across Anambra’s 5,718 polling units and several collation centres, with improved transport coordination to ensure early arrival of materials.

On security, Professor Amupitan disclosed that the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) has finalized robust security arrangements for the poll. The Nigeria Police Force will deploy 45,000 officers, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will assign 10,250 personnel across the state.
He assured residents that with the Peace Accord, the cooperation of security agencies, and the engagement of traditional rulers and faith leaders, the Anambra governorship election will be both peaceful and successful.
The INEC boss called on all stakeholders to rise above partisanship and put the state’s collective interest first. “Let us ensure this election is remembered not for conflict or chaos, but for unity, credibility, and the triumph of democracy,” he said.
