The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has broken silence on the Labour Party (LP) leadership tussle, amid viral media reports suggesting it has recognized a new National Chairman and National Secretary for the party.
In a strongly worded statement issued by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, the Commission described the circulating claims as “false and misleading,” asserting that no official position has been taken regarding the leadership dispute within the LP or any similar issue involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Oyekanmi, the confusion stems from outdated information on the Commission’s website, which had previously reflected the names of LP officials based on a separate court ruling, one that has no connection to the recent Supreme Court judgment. He emphasized that the listings on the INEC portal do not represent any new recognition or endorsement.

“The Commission has not made any decision in respect of either the LP or PDP,” Oyekanmi clarified. “As a law-abiding institution, INEC is carefully studying the Supreme Court judgement on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public in due course.”
The clarification comes amid heated speculations and political maneuvering following the apex court’s decision, which many anticipated would trigger a leadership shake-up within the opposition parties. As stakeholders await INEC’s official stance, the power tussle within the Labour Party remains unresolved, fueling fresh concerns over internal democracy and stability ahead of future elections.
