India has officially submitted an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant step toward its long-term vision of staging the 2036 Olympic Games. This move signals the country’s determination to establish itself as a global sporting hub.
Having previously hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India aims to capitalize on that experience despite the controversies surrounding alleged corruption and mismanagement during the event’s preparation.
However, the games themselves were widely regarded as successful, with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium serving as the epicenter of the $6 billion sporting spectacle.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha confirmed the country’s bid, stating, “We have sent an expression of interest and we are hopeful the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will consider our proposal.”

India’s chances appear strong, especially given the challenges the Commonwealth Games has faced in securing hosts in recent years. The 2026 edition will take place in Glasgow after Australia’s Victoria withdrew due to escalating costs. Similarly, the 2022 Games had to be relocated to Birmingham after Durban, South Africa, backed out over financial constraints.
With the March 31 deadline for bids fast approaching, India is positioning itself as a viable candidate for the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games. Meanwhile, the country is also aggressively pushing its bid for the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad in Gujarat emerging as the centerpiece of its ambitious plans to bring the world’s biggest sporting event to Indian soil.
The Commonwealth Games Federation has acknowledged ongoing discussions regarding the 2030 Games but has yet to release further details. As India steps up its efforts, all eyes are now on the decision that could shape its sporting future on the global stage.
