The Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) has commenced plans to provide additional boreholes and toilet facilities at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences Teaching Hospital (SUMASTH), Igbo Eno, Udenu Local Government Area.
The intervention is aimed at improving access to potable water and sanitation facilities at the teaching hospital and the adjoining State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS).
The General Manager of the CSDA, Hon. Monday Diamond Ani, disclosed this on Thursday during a working visit to the teaching hospital, where he met with the Chief Medical Director of SUMASTH, Prof. Hughes Okafor, and the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS, Prof. James Ogbonnaya.
Ani said the intervention was being undertaken through the support of the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Mbah.
According to him, the planned facilities would complement existing water and sanitation infrastructure and help address the growing demand created by the increasing number of students, staff, patients and visitors using the institutions.
“This historic working visit was for possible project interventions, especially in the areas of construction of toilets and boreholes to augment the availability of potable water supply in the Teaching Hospital,” Ani said.
He explained that the need for additional facilities had become more urgent because of the high patronage of SUMASTH and the rapid growth in the population of both the university and teaching hospital.

“These amenities are imperative because of the high patronage of the SUMAS Teaching Hospital,” he added.
Ani said the proposed projects would help ease pressure on existing facilities and improve the overall operating environment for healthcare delivery and academic activities.
He noted that the increasing number of students and staff had significantly raised demand for water and other essential social amenities across the university and teaching hospital.
“The special intervention will solve the challenge of high demand of water in the university as a result of rapid influx of students and large number of staff in both SUMASTH and SUMAS,” he said.
The CSDA boss said the state government remained committed to addressing critical infrastructure needs across Enugu State as part of its broader development agenda.
He said Governor Mbah had demonstrated a deliberate commitment to improving key sectors and ensuring that essential infrastructure kept pace with the state’s development.
During a tour of the teaching hospital, Ani also expressed satisfaction with the quality of facilities available at the institution, describing the complex as a significant addition to the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
He said the teaching hospital offered a memorable medical tourism experience because of its combination of modern technology and state-of-the-art facilities.
Responding, the Chief Medical Director of SUMASTH, Prof. Hughes Okafor, expressed appreciation to the CSDA for identifying the need for additional social amenities at the institution.
Okafor commended the agency for the intervention and thanked Governor Peter Mbah for his continued support for the teaching hospital and university.
He said the administration’s support had contributed to efforts to maintain high standards and improve service delivery at the institution.
The proposed borehole and toilet projects are expected to complement existing facilities and strengthen the capacity of SUMASTH and SUMAS to cope with their growing population and increasing demand for essential services.
