Heartland stuns Rivers United, Enyimba, Tornadoes record wins

Heartland of Owerri defeated Rivers United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday28 fixture 2-0 in the Dan Anyiam Stadium yesterday.

The relegation-struggling team maintained a goalless draw in the first half with the NPFL league leaders but
broke the deadlock 9 minutes into the second half through Sunday Chinedu’s header.

Like an omen to the visitors, the first goal created another for the Spartans 7 minutes later which saw Chijioke Mbaoma send goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai the wrong way through substitute, Alexander Alfred’s defence splitting pass to double the lead.

However, the wins by Heartland against Rivers United have increased, according to the last 10 meetings between the two clubs since 10 April, 2016, to two while Rivers United have won five with three draws.

Also, Enyimba of Aba narrowly escaped a two all draw with Lobi Stars after the Peoples’ Elephant secured maximum points at the Enyimba Stadium in a matchday28 thriller.

The Peoples’ Elephant opened the scoresheet in the second half after Ortom Boys put in a relentless effort to force the first half into a barren outcome.

Unfortunately for Lobi Stars, who hover around the NPFL red zone, the two-time CAF Champions League winners broke the deadlock and appreciated their efforts with a second three minutes to injury time through Samuel Kalu and Samuel Stone’s goals.

The visitors only got a consolation from Samuel Ganda. Elsewhere at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Niger Tornadoes held on to a 1-0 first-half lead to secure maximum three points against Gombe United.
