A gunman was shot dead by US Secret Service agents after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening in Washington, DC.
According to authorities, the suspect pulled a weapon from his bag and began shooting close to the White House security perimeter shortly after 6 p.m. Secret Service officers immediately returned fire, killing the assailant.
A bystander was also hit during the exchange of gunfire and taken for medical attention, while no Secret Service officer was injured.
US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident but was not harmed.

Trump later praised the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies for their swift response, describing the suspect as someone with a violent history and an obsession with the White House.
The shooting caused panic around the area as security operatives sealed off nearby streets and journalists on the White House grounds were ordered to take cover.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns following previous assassination attempts targeting Trump during his political career.
