Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved a scholarship fund exceeding N730 million for indigenous students studying across various institutions in Nigeria. The announcement, made during a ceremony at the Ministry of Education’s Quality Assurance office in Maiduguri, highlights the administration’s unwavering commitment to human capital development through education.

The cheque for the scholarship was officially presented by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engineer Lawan Abba Wakilbe. Speaking at the event, Wakilbe disclosed that the funds would benefit 26,888 undergraduate students, with disbursements scheduled to begin immediately.

This scholarship program is part of a broader initiative by the Zulum administration, which has already allocated over N8 billion in 2024 for scholarships to students both within Nigeria and abroad. Wakilbe emphasized the importance of accuracy in submitting bank details to avoid payment delays, cautioning that failed transactions could lead to funds being redirected to other educational initiatives.

The commissioner also urged students to maximize available educational resources, including opportunities provided by NELFUND, and called on student leaders to foster active engagement with these programs. His message underscored the administration’s vision of equipping Borno’s youth with the tools needed to excel academically and contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.

The scholarship initiative has been met with widespread praise, particularly from the National Union of Borno State Students (NUBOSS). The union’s National President, Abdullahi Ahmadu Umara, expressed deep gratitude to Governor Zulum for his relentless efforts to uplift the education sector. He lauded the governor’s strategic investments in education as a transformative step toward securing a brighter future for the state.

Governor Zulum’s scholarship approval is being hailed as a great moment and opportunity for education in Borno State, cementing his reputation as a leader deeply committed to empowering the next generation. This initiative not only provides financial relief to thousands of families but also serves as a beacon of hope for a state steadily rebuilding itself through education and innovation.
