The Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the welfare of families of deceased military men and women.

The governor made the pledge during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony, held at the Cenotaph in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The event, which commemorates the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel who paid the ultimate price for the nation, saw Gov. Oborevwori leading other dignitaries, including military and paramilitary officials, in laying wreaths to honour the deceased servicemen and women.

Gov. Oborevwori stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the nation’s dead military personnel and supporting their families.

“This day happens to be something we celebrate every year in remembrance of our fallen heroes. My prayer is for God to grant the souls of our fallen heroes’ eternal rest and also to console their families.

“I want to reassure their families that they will never be neglected. Whichever way we can support them, we will continue to support the widows and those on the frontline. Today shows that Nigeria cares; our people care. I encourage them to stand firm and stand for our country, Nigeria,” he said.

Also, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, called for sustained peace and unity in Nigeria.

“I encourage all soldiers and citizens to continue keeping the peace and work towards the unity of Nigeria. It is important for them to know that Nigerians are praying for them to maintain peace and harmony,” Guwor stated.

Coordinator of the Military Widows Association in Delta State, Mrs. Chinyere Obosi, made a heartfelt appeal to the government for assistance. She lamented the struggles faced by widows in military barracks and emphasised the need for empowerment programmes.

“We are appealing to the government to assist us. When you visit the barracks, you will see so many widows, some of whom are struggling. We are just pleading for help.

“Empowerment programmes were initiated in the past, but they have stopped for some time now. Many widows are suffering and in desperate need of support. We are begging for intervention to ease their burden.

“Life without my husband has not been easy. As you can see, some of us became very emotional today; it’s truly overwhelming. It’s only by the grace of God that we are able to carry on. With God, all things are possible,” she said.
