Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the release of N15.67 billion severance allowances and gratuities owed to councillors who served under the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The approval, announced by the Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, follows the resolutions of the 27th Executive Council Meeting held on Tuesday and chaired by Governor Yusuf. The funds will benefit former All Progressives Congress (APC) councillors who completed their tenures during Ganduje’s eight-year administration but had been left unpaid for years.
Waiya described the move as a testament to the political maturity and people-centered philosophy of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)-led government. He emphasized that Governor Yusuf’s action to clear debts incurred by his predecessor despite belonging to a different political party, reflects a new era of “politics without bitterness” in Kano State.
In less than two years in office, Governor Yusuf has already paid over N20 billion out of the more than N40 billion in liabilities owed to retired and deceased workers inherited from the Ganduje administration. This latest approval further demonstrates his resolve to correct the injustices and economic hardship inflicted on the people during the past government, especially on grassroots leaders who were neglected despite their sacrifices.

Waiya recalled that the Ganduje administration received bailout funds from the Federal Government under former President Muhammadu Buhari but failed to settle the arrears of workers and councillors. This negligence, according to the leadership of the APC councillors, contributed significantly to the party’s loss in the 2024 gubernatorial election.
“This act of political goodwill by Governor Yusuf not only restores dignity to over 3,000 former councillors but also highlights a clear contrast between the NNPP and the former APC-led government, which was widely seen as elitist and disconnected from the needs of ordinary citizens,” Waiya stated.
In addition to settling the severance pay, the Executive Council also approved N51.57 billion for the execution of strategic projects and people-oriented programs aimed at enhancing governance and improving the quality of life across Kano State.
The governor’s growing popularity among the masses continues to rise, driven by policies rooted in transparency, accountability, and social justice, a stark departure from the perceived nepotism and insensitivity of the previous regime. As the NNPP government consolidates its achievements, Kano appears set for a new chapter of inclusive development and responsible leadership.
