Four-time champions Germany recovered from an unexpected setback to thrash World Cup debutants Curaçao 7-1 in their opening Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
The Germans looked on course for a comfortable victory when Felix Nmecha opened the scoring after just six minutes, registering the fastest goal of the tournament so far.
However, Curaçao stunned their illustrious opponents midway through the first half as Livano Comenencia netted the Caribbean nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal, sending their supporters into wild celebrations and briefly silencing the German faithful.
The equaliser appeared to spark Germany into life. Defender Nico Schlotterbeck restored the lead with a towering header before Kai Havertz converted from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time to hand Julian Nagelsmann’s side a commanding 3-1 advantage at the interval.
