Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has shared her reasons for ceasing in-person church attendance, a move that has ignited considerable debate among Nigerians on social media.
In a video she shared on her Snapchat on Sunday morning, the box office star was seen making breakfast for her children before they left for church.
While her kids still attend services in person, Funke revealed that she now prefers to worship from home.
She explained that the constant attention from church media teams makes it difficult for her to concentrate on her worship.
Whenever she is in church, she often notices cameras directed at her, which makes her feel uneasy and distracted.
To maintain her privacy and focus, she has opted for online church services, using her Sundays to cook and work on her film projects.
Her remarks quickly generated a variety of responses online. Some Nigerians expressed understanding for her perspective, agreeing that the intense focus on individuals, especially celebrities, can disrupt the spiritual atmosphere of church services.
Others, however, questioned her decision, pointing out that as a public figure, she frequently attends events and shares her life on social media, where cameras are also present.

@ComfosLolola commented, “I completely understand her. But if she attends one church regularly, the attention will likely lessen over time as people get used to seeing her.”
@Okp_naijavibes stated, “That’s understandable; being a star means many will want to take pictures when you go out, but she shouldn’t use that as an excuse to avoid church.”
#Realmade remarked, “Funke Akindele said she can’t worship in peace with cameras in her face. That’s the hidden cost of fame. Online church isn’t laziness; it’s about survival.”
@Roselinchukwu noted, “She’s not wrong. The other day I was watching Upper Room, and the camera was on Mike Afolarin’s face every five minutes.”
@favourokepite added, “Some church media teams act like they’re working for TMZ instead of a ministry. If people can’t even pray without a camera in their face, then online services are truly the only way to find real peace.”
