French football has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of 21-year-old footballer Kenzo Kies after a drowning incident in the Rhône River near Lyon.
Kies, who was attached to Ligue 2 side Guingamp’s reserve team, was rescued by emergency responders on Monday after being pulled from the river in critical condition. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he later passed away in hospital.
Reports indicate that Kies and three friends entered the river in an attempt to cool off amid an intense heatwave sweeping across France, where temperatures have soared to nearly 40 degrees Celsius in some regions. Emergency services successfully rescued the other three individuals, while Kies was located later during the search operation.
The tragedy comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the extreme weather conditions. French authorities have reported dozens of heat-related drowning incidents across the country in recent days as many residents seek relief from the scorching temperatures.
Kies began his football development at renowned academies in Lyon and Saint-Etienne before joining Guingamp in 2025. Known for his dedication and quiet professionalism, he was regarded as one of the promising young talents within the club’s setup.
Guingamp expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to his family and loved ones while pledging full support during the difficult period.

Former club Saint-Etienne also paid tribute, describing Kies as a talented player and respected member of the club’s youth system. The club noted that he spent seven years developing at its Robert-Herbin Sports Centre and was admired by teammates, coaches, and staff alike.
Plans are reportedly being made to honour Kies’ memory at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium when the new season begins.
