A group under the auspices of Youth Alive Foundation has organized voters sensitization and enlightenment exercise for traders and market women in Akwa Ibom state

The group which is a non-profit organization also educated persons with disabilities on voting patterns with innovative approach of a mock election.

Speaking on Thursday at the popular Itam market in Itu Local government area of the state, while conducting a mock election simulation for the February poll, the Director of the Organisation, Dr Uduak Akpan enlightened the people on how to cast their votes during the election.

Akpan noted that Akwa Ibom people are ready to exercise their franchise by voting for any candidate of their choice adding that the group was satisfied with the turnout.

“Akwa Ibom people are ready to practice and exercise their democratic rights, they are fully ready to vote. The people have been educated, we are taking this awareness to other states in the south – South, we are going to Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River State and so on”

While appreciating traders who turned out to learn the new system of voting, she urged them to come out and vote during the election.

“Right now we are at Itam market and already we have been in this market for a couple of hours, over 200 people have gone through the voting process and they have experienced what it feels like and more people are queuing up and also going through accreditation. My general feeling is that this has been good, Akwa Ibom people have been educated and I urge you all to come out and vote on that day”

Another Officer Mrs Ani Nsima who spoke through an interpreter for the Deaf Cluster A’Ibom said that the new system of voting ( computer accreditation) is really good as it allows persons with disabilities to cast their votes freely for any candidate of their choice without discrimination and interference.

“Persons with disabilities have the right to vote for whosoever they want, they have their rights, even the deaf have their rights”

She appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission to make provisions for the disabled so that they can feel comfortable on the day of the election.

One of the Persons Living With Disabilities, Ms Idorenyin Mark explained that the new system is self-explanatory and easy for anybody to vote.

At Ibom plaza, the massive turnout shows that citizens were fully prepared to vote.

Contacted, one of the voters simply identified as comrade Isaac Akata described the new system as clear and appreciative

“in fact, it is very clear, especially from the awareness the Youth Alive Foundation had given to the public. This is very good and appreciated by good Nigerians.’ So I think if such awareness is created even in the rural area, robbing of voters or electorate, will be a thing of the past during the election day”. he said.
