The federal government has warned Nigerians about the dangers of engaging in foreign armed conflicts through illegal recruitment methods.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, stated that recent reports indicate that Nigerian citizens are being deceived with false promises of lucrative jobs, educational opportunities, or migration benefits, only to find themselves sent to war zones.

Some victims are allegedly coerced into signing military contracts in foreign languages, with their travel documents confiscated upon arrival.

Intermediaries often facilitate travel using tourist or other non-military visas, putting citizens in significant danger.

Mr. Tuggar emphasized that involvement in foreign wars outside of government-approved frameworks not only jeopardizes lives but may also breach Nigerian and international laws regarding mercenary activities.

He noted that the federal government is collaborating with both domestic and international partners to investigate illegal recruitment practices and raise public awareness about the associated risks.

Nigerian missions abroad, the minister added, have been instructed to enhance consular vigilance and provide timely warnings.

He urged parents, guardians, community leaders, and educational institutions to inform young Nigerians about these dangers and advised citizens to verify any overseas job or study offers through official government channels.

The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens both domestically and internationally, warning against exploitation or trafficking into foreign conflicts.
