The federal government has announced plans to initiate cash transfers to 2.2 million impoverished and vulnerable households throughout Nigeria by the end of August.
Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, made this announcement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, August 18.
He stated that the initiative is part of the government’s strategy to alleviate the effects of poverty on its citizens.
“In the coming days, before August concludes, we will reach out to 2.2 million households. The National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will identify beneficiaries from the national social register, focusing on the lowest income groups,” Sununu explained.
The minister also noted advancements in the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, mentioning that ₦419 billion has been distributed to approximately five million Nigerians so far.

He pointed out that 71 percent of the current beneficiaries are located in the northern region, while 21 percent are in the south, which reflects the government’s approach to target the most impoverished households.
Sununu assured that the administration is dedicated to enhancing social protection systems and expanding safety nets.
He emphasized that these interventions aim not only to meet immediate needs but also to lay the groundwork for long-term poverty alleviation.
“With this rollout, millions of households will receive direct financial assistance during a time of increasing economic challenges,” the minister concluded.
